Abstract:

“Sleeping” has always an important motif in painting, and the expression and understanding of it have become problematic. This paper tries to reveal the triple mystery of the image of sleeping in Nicolas Poussin's Rinaldo and Armida. Based on the pursuit of undifferentiated love, the “inert body” shows the reduction of the body and enters the dimension of the non-time. Poussin's images of sleeping suggests a “soul time” triggered by a mirror-like structure, which initiates the effect of “concentration” and points to the infinity of emotional processes. Finally, for the internal theme of Rinaldo and Armida, “silence” as a topology, is revealed. The motif of sleeping has thus exceeded the boundary of images and enters the realm of art.
