Abstract: As a special literary form, the rhythmic-prose-style fiction enjoyed a brief prosperity in the early years of the Republic of China. From 1912 to 1919, 45 kinds of rhythmic-prose-style fiction were published in such literary journals as the Civil Rights News, Civil Rights Elements, Fiction Series, New Journal of Fiction, etc. Under the impact of various factors in the literary field, these fictional stories presented both the old and new literary characteristics in their plot, themes and other aspects. However, they finally faded from the literary stage due to the inherent limits of the parallel prose used in fiction writing as well as the varying propensity of readership. Such a phenomenon has become a typical example of the impact of changes in the literary field on the development of fiction.
