Abstract:

The “invasion” of Artificial Intelligence into the field of human intellectual activities has sparked heated discussions in recent years. The growing maturity of AI painting gives rise to people's concern over artistic originality, a concern not without precedent in history. The problem of forgery in the 20th century was once an issue of great concern in the world of art, which witnessed the birth of a variety of artistic theories. Informed by Nelson Goodman's theory of induction, this essay investigates the problem of forgery and Goodman’s argument about it, attempting to show Goodman’s solution to Hume’s problem on the identification of “style” in the epistemological turn of aesthetics. This essay also interprets AI’s mechanisms of imitation and innovation of “styles” by exploring the nature of induction and its role in the worldmaking that involves art theories.
