摘要： 《儒林外史》的传播程度是与它的思想艺术水准不相称的。作为一部思想深刻、知识丰富、叙事高超的小说精品，《儒林外史》对读者的接受提出了比其他小说更高的要求。其思想的深邃与多义性令浅阅读却步；知识的密度与广度设立了阅读的又一文化门槛；情节的淡化与深隐的叙事要求读者改变消遣性阅读习惯；而吴敬梓的尚古情怀与当下意识在时过境迁后也产生了时间性隔膜。只有充分意识到《儒林外史》文本特性与接受障碍的复杂情形，才能破解《儒林外史》传播中的窘境，让这部伟大之书为更多的人理解。

Abstract: The paper claims that the spread of Wu Jingzhi's The Scholars (The Unofficial History of the Forest of the Literati) does not live up to its artistic and thematic achievements as it requires more of the readers than other classical novels in the period. The profundity in thoughts and the ambiguity in meaning require close reading, while the density and range of knowledge provide more cultural obstacles. The implicit plot and narration demand the readers to be highly engaged, and Wu Jingzi's ancient-oriented sentiments are sometimes at odds with the mores of the present time. The paper concludes that The Scholars can be fully understood and reach to more people only when the complexity of its textual features is fully acknowledged and the obstacle of reception undone.
