The Power of Image: Medieval Debate on Icon and Its Theoretical Value

Abstract: The debate on icon was an important event in the theological and visual cultural field in the Western Medieval era, and it exerted a profound influence on Western visual culture. This paper examines the theological and cultural context of the debate, and with a focus on the relationship between invisibility and visibility, the paper discusses the paradoxical value of representation and its effects on visual cultural field.
